Off the Map, Head Over Heels: 6 Romantic Getaways Off the Beaten Path

Some of the most romantic trips aren't to the places everyone else is going. They're to the little harbor town where the waiters remember your name by the second night, the hot spring you have almost to yourselves, or the island sunset you didn't have to elbow anyone to see. If you're craving that kind of trip, here are six of my favorite romantic getaways off the beaten path, with a feel for what they cost and how to make them extra special.

What Makes a Getaway Romantic (and a Little Off the Map)

The magic usually comes down to a few simple things:

  • Fewer Crowds: Quiet beaches, uncrowded viewpoints and restaurants where you can actually hear each other.

  • Small, Characterful Hotels: Family-run guesthouses, restored palazzos and boutique hotels with a sense of place.

  • Slow Days: Long lunches, scenic walks and time to simply enjoy being together.

  • A Few Unforgettable Moments: A private boat ride, a hot spring at dusk or a sunset dinner you'll be talking about for years.

6 Romantic Getaways Off the Beaten Path

A quick note on prices: these are typical starting rates for a double room from booking sites and travel guides in October 2026. Rates change with the season and how far ahead you book, and summer is the most expensive time almost everywhere, so think of them as a starting point rather than a quote.

1. The Bay of Kotor, Montenegro

Picture a fjord-like bay ringed by mountains, with stone villages tucked along the water. The tiny town of Perast is pure romance, with baroque palaces, waterfront cafés and two little island churches just offshore.

  • Where to Stay: Small hotels in and around Perast often start around $75 to $120 per night, with luxury resorts on the bay running about $200 to $350 or more.

  • Romantic Moments: Take a small boat out to Our Lady of the Rocks, linger over seafood by the water, and climb the old town walls of Kotor early in the morning for the view.

  • When to Go: May, June and September bring warm weather without the peak summer cruise crowds.

2. The Azores, Portugal

These green volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic feel like a secret. Think crater lakes, hydrangea-lined roads, steaming hot springs and whales offshore.

  • Where to Stay: On São Miguel, well-reviewed boutique hotels in Ponta Delgada can start around $95 per night outside summer, and design hotels near the Furnas hot springs often run about $190 and up.

  • Romantic Moments: Soak together in the warm, iron-rich pools at Terra Nostra Garden in Furnas, watch the mist lift over the twin lakes of Sete Cidades and head out on a whale-watching trip.

  • When to Go: Late spring through early fall is the most reliable weather. The islands are mild year-round, but pack a light rain jacket any time.

3. Puglia, Italy

Italy's heel is sunny, relaxed and still under the radar for many travelers, with whitewashed hill towns, olive groves and cliffside swimming spots.

  • Where to Stay: Boutique hotels in restored palazzos can start around $100 to $235 per night. For something unforgettable, stay at a masseria, a converted fortified farmhouse surrounded by olive trees, with pools, long dinners and plenty of room to unwind.

  • Romantic Moments: Watch the sunset over the sea in Polignano a Mare, wander the white lanes of Ostuni, and spend a night in a trullo, one of the region's fairytale cone-roofed stone houses.

  • When to Go: May, June and September are warm and lovely, with fewer crowds than August.

4. Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Lake Bled gets the postcards, but its quieter neighbor, Lake Bohinj, is where couples go for peace and alpine scenery inside Triglav National Park.

  • Where to Stay: Stylish lakeside boutique hotels start around $225 per night, and cozy guesthouses in nearby villages often cost less.

  • Romantic Moments: Rent a kayak or paddleboard on the clear lake, hike to the Savica waterfall and ride the Vogel cable car for big views of the Julian Alps.

  • When to Go: Summer is perfect for swimming, and September and early October bring golden leaves and quiet trails.

5. Milos, Greece

If Santorini feels too busy, Milos is your island. It has dramatic white rock formations, sea caves and colorful fishing villages, with far fewer crowds.

  • Where to Stay: Simple hotels near the port can start around $95 per night, nicer waterfront hotels around $200, and boutique hotels with a private pool around $330 or more.

  • Romantic Moments: Explore the sea caves of Kleftiko by boat, catch the sunset from the hilltop village of Plaka and enjoy a seafood dinner by the water in Pollonia, where a main course often runs about $25 to $30.

  • When to Go: June and September offer warm water and calmer prices than July and August.

6. The Kumano Kodo, Japan

For couples who love a little adventure, this ancient pilgrimage trail winds through the forested mountains south of Osaka, past shrines, tea houses and hot spring villages.

  • Where to Stay: Traditional family-run guesthouses along the trail often cost about $60 to $70 per person per night, including a home-cooked dinner and breakfast. Upscale ryokan inns with private hot spring baths cost more.

  • Romantic Moments: Walk a scenic section of the trail together, soak in a hot spring at the end of the day and enjoy a traditional multi-course dinner in your cotton robes.

  • When to Go: Spring and fall bring the most comfortable hiking weather. Rooms are limited, so book early.

Why a Travel Advisor Makes Off-the-Beaten-Path Trips Easier

Lesser-known places are wonderful precisely because they're not set up for crowds, which can also make them trickier to plan on your own. That's where a travel advisor really earns their keep:

  • Insider Recommendations: An advisor can point you to the small hotels, guesthouses and restaurants that make these places special, instead of whatever ranks first online.

  • Smoother Logistics: Ferries, island flights, rental cars and trail luggage transfers all need to line up. An advisor plans the connections so you can focus on each other.

  • Romantic Extras: When you're celebrating an anniversary or honeymoon, an advisor can let the hotel know and request a room upgrade, a bottle of something bubbly or other touches when available.

  • Perks at No Extra Cost: At partner hotels, booking through an advisor can add extras like daily breakfast and hotel credits, usually at the same rate as booking direct.

  • Someone in Your Corner: If a ferry is canceled or a flight changes, you have one person to call to help sort it out.

Tips for Planning Your Romantic Getaway

  • Travel in Shoulder Season: Spring and early fall usually mean better rates, warmer welcomes and more of the place to yourselves.

  • Slow Down: Two or three places in a week is plenty. More time in each spot means more time together and less time packing.

  • Splurge on One Special Night: Save room in the budget for a memorable hotel, a private boat trip or a sunset dinner.

  • Check Entry Rules Early: Make sure your passports are valid, and check the latest entry requirements before you book.

Off the Map, Head Over Heels

The most memorable romantic trips often happen just beyond the famous places, where the pace is slower and the moments feel like your own. Whether you're drifting across the Bay of Kotor, soaking in an Azores hot spring or watching the sun set over Milos, these destinations are made for falling in love all over again.

So pick your hideaway and start dreaming. Happy travels!
